Jean Prouvé , chaise " tout bois " 1941

La chaise standard “tout bois” de Jean Prouvé circa 1941. Provenance Vauconsant (près de Nancy). Au début de la guerre la pénurie de métal obligea Jean Prouvé à repenser la chaise “standard” pour la réaliser en bois et l’adapter afin qu’elle devienne démontable ; il demanda à son ami Pierre Chartreux de l’usine de Vauconsant, dont Jean Prouvé était l’administrateur, de produire cette chaise. Exemplaire en chêne massif et contreplaqué de chêne, petit dossier en forme, profilé bois traversant (possibilité de démonter la chaise) montants arrière en “ailes d’avion”. Rare chaise des premières séries. Extraordinaire montage à la fois solide et léger (3,8 kg !) — iconique d’une période du travail de Prouvé, intemporelle et puissante ; rare à la vente ; hauteur : 84 cm, largeur : 40 cm, profondeur : 49 cm.

The “all-wood” Standard Chair by Jean Prouvé, circa 1941. Provenance: Vauconsant (near Nancy). At the start of the war, metal shortages forced Jean Prouvé to rethink his “Standard” chair, producing it in wood and adapting the design to be demountable; he asked his friend Pierre Chartreux of the Vauconsant factory, where Prouvé served as administrator, to manufacture this chair. Example in solid oak and oak plywood, small shaped backrest, through wooden profile (chair can be disassembled), rear uprights in “airplane wing” form. Rare chair from the early series. An extraordinary construction that is at once strong and lightweight (3.8 kg!) — emblematic of a period in Prouvé’s work, timeless and powerful; rare to find for sale.
